Murano Glass Toys

From 4 September to 7 January 2022, an interactive exhibition was held to animate the Murano Glass Museum (VE) with the incredible creations of 13 master glassmakers.

From the more traditional games, such as a little horse or a music box, to the more modern ones, such as a 2 meter high rocket and the track for remote controlled cars, which winds for 37 metres. Murano Glass Toys, scheduled at the  Murano Glass Museum  from 4 September to 7 January 2022, was an exhibition with the declared aim of revolutionising the common perception of glass by presenting 13 enormous games created by as many Murano master glassmakers. Curated by the architect Matteo Silverio  with the collaboration of the visual artist Martin Romeo, for the interactions, the installation reconstructed a real playroom inside the Brandolini Room. A room in which visitors could actually play, given that most of the works were equipped with electrical pressure, proximity or movement sensors that animate the glass toys.

“In Murano Glass Toys the visitor was able to interact with the works thanks to sensors: this is what was not expected from Murano glass. With this exhibition we have overturned rules and beliefs, bringing Murano glass to a level of applicability never seen before and perhaps never imagined. We amazed a particular target of visitors, that of children and teenagers, who had never been involved with Murano glass; we wanted to make a more mature audience experience a return to the carefreeness of youth.”

The design of the glass games and their creation required several months of work, the exhibition was created by the Consorzio Promovetro Murano with the contribution of the Veneto Region and the Venice Rovigo Chamber of Commerce, and the support of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and Town of Venice. The initiative is part of the rich program of activities designed to celebrate the 1600 years of Venice, with the aim of helping to promote the regional brand Vetro Artistico® Murano, is included in the program of The Venice Glass Week 2021 and was sponsored by Confartigianato Venezia and Confindustria Venezia Metropolitan Area of Venice and Rovigo.
